Have you tested your sump pump lately?

Important topic – especially now that we are in the spring when it can rain quite a bit – test your sump pump on a regular basis.  If you aren’t sure what to check the first time, ask for help – the knowledge will go a long way. 

You’ll want to make sure that the power is connected & functioning and the water is pumping.  If it’s a dry time of year, you can simply dump a bucket of water in the pit to test everything.  While you are testing, look for things like corrosion or obstructions.  Make sure there is nothing in the way of the float. Also, listen for any unusual noises.  If the pump is getting super loud, it’s possible that there is something wrong with the motor or the pump has been running continuously. 

If your sump stops working, you will likely have a flooded basement – which is a royal pain to deal with.  A simple 5 minutes to make sure the sump is in working order can be so helpful.
