Let's Take a Moment to Talk About Your Estate

Lauren takes a moment to talk about Estates – meaning your home and all of your assets. We’ve helped a number of clients through selling homes as part of an Estate situation and it’s a topic that needs more attention. It is SO important to help your loved ones while you are still here. Dealing with an Estate is super involved. It often includes attorneys, the court system, expenses, and so much more. You can take a few simple steps to help your loved ones IMMENSELY.

 

 

First, take the time to write out your assets – these are all of your valuable items. You can take pictures or write a list. These can include collectibles, vehicles, antiques, art, jewelry, tools, and more. Then, make a list of all of your financial assets. You can keep this list private, but make sure to include the names of the companies and account numbers for anything financial. These can include credit card companies, mortgages, 401K or retirement accounts, life insurance, homeowners insurance, and more.

 

Make sure that you have a beneficiary listed for any account that can have one. With this, make sure to draft a will. I totally understand how it can be a daunting task and an easy to avoid task, but it is SO important for the protection of your loved ones. A good attorney can make the process relatively easy for you – and the effort will go a LONG way. Also, in the digital world that we live in, make a list of your account log ins and passwords. It’s a pesky task, but will save SO many headaches for your Power of Attorney. After all of this hard work is done, make a few copies of everything. Tell your Power of Attorney where to find a copy of these documents if needed. Then – celebrate – you’ve earned it!
