Quick Tips for New Homeowners! They can save you money!

As a new homeowner, there is truly a never-ending list of things to remember to take care of your home.  Here’s a quick hit list of a few really common ones that we come across regularly with our clients:

First, change your furnace filter every 3-6 months.  Change it more frequently if you are doing messy, dirty, dusty projects or if the house was left in a less than ideal state. 

Second, a lot of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are now hard-wired or come with an expiration, but it’s important to know which kind you have and know if you need to mark a date on the calendar to change batteries twice a year.

Third, take some time to clean up the landscaping around your house.  You can avoid some foundation issues by simply making sure the dirt is graded so that the water flows away from the house.  You can make sure the plants, trees or shrubs are not too close to your home’s walls.  You don’t want to create issues with water or moisture being too close to your house.
